Competition is good. It brings out the best in us. It motivates us to be better. It is the driving force behind our hard work. My friends and I have reached that pivotal stage in our lives, where we need to make vital decisions to shape our career for the future. The past few days have been turbulent, finishing portfolios, applying to the finest possible design firms, emails, follow-ups, calls, etc. It’s been a remarkable learning experience.

However, there is one peculiar thing that I have noticed during this wild phase of our lives - the true character of people. My post here is not an endeavor at character assassination. It’s a let out for my disappointment. I said competition is good. But unfortunately ethical competition is not everyone’s cup of tea. I personally value ethics. And if I ever caught myself procuring something through malice I’d be ashamed and would never be able to forgive myself.

It disgusts me to know that people stoop down to unimaginable levels to achieve their goals. I wonder if they realize that it reflects poorly on their upbringing. It’s hard to fathom the sort of values that must be taught to them.

As days pass, truth is revealing its ugly side. It has finally dawned on me that in these four years I was a mere colleague to a lot people (whom I considered friends) waiting for this precise moment to play their sickening game.

I have also realized that I have earned just a handful of true friends whom I am going to cherish forever.

I hope you all do well. And rub it in the detractor’s faces. :P

While travelling on the bus today listening to ‘Race Sanson Ki’ (bipasha throws her boobs in the air) from the Abbas Mustan’s apparently “racy” thriller Race, on Maya’s new 30 GB iPod I realized how disgusting the music scene of the Indian Film Industry is. I was trying to remember films in the last couple of years that had good music. And strangely I could come up with three odd films. For a country that makes the most number of films in the world and for a country whose films thrive on their music, it’s a reasonably dismal picture.

Himesh Reshamiya (Urmila’s tandoori nights waving in front of her face), Pritam (Dhoom, Aishwarya hitting her head to tell people usko kisi ne crazy kiya), Anu Malik (Mallika Sherawat’s talli act), the list can go on. The very fact I have mentioned the actresses featured in these trinkets of originality composed by these brilliant music directors shows how utterly rubbish these fleeting hits are that nobody wants to even know who composed the songs they dance to. Out of the current lot only A.R. Rahman probably deserves recognition. But then again he composed the music for Jaane tu… and Yuvraaj too. What is wrong with the musicians in India who compose for the Indian Films? I long to listen to some good Hindi music.

By the way the three films that I could come up with which had decent music are:

Rang De Basanti – A.R.Rahman (Favorite)

Life in a Metro – Pritam (Surprisingly Original)

Taare Zameen Par – Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy (Except bum bum bole)

Changeling

I have always been an admirer of Clint Eastwood’s films and my fondness continues with his latest film titled ‘Changeling’. I saw it today and I must say I am absolutely overwhelmed by the film. The film is a stunning symphony of great acting, awesome (I mean it) music (Clint Eastwood) and visually engaging frames. It’s been a while since I saw a film that has managed to occupy me and dare I say sort of move me.

The film is over 2 hours long but the length did not bother me at all. I am certain the length might be an issue with a lot of people but it was not for me because I guess I view Mr.Eastwood's films with a lot of patience.Another thing I am most unquestionably impressed by is Angelina Jolie’s extraordinary ability to carry a film single handedly that long. I do know Angelina Jolie is an Academy Award winning actress but I have always been affected by her gifted aspects other than acting skills. This time round it was different, Angeline Jolie can act. She involved me in her engaging portrayal of a mother looking for her missing son so emphatically it absolutely inundated me.

It is a film that requires time and patience to watch because it is not a pass time affair. But it is a film that no one should let pass.

P.S.: The music is as fine as Angelina. It’s great.

I feel an unexpected detachment from my environment. It seems that the sole purpose of everything that exists around me is to bother me.

I know why I feel this way. I think I can associate it to the undesirable return of my old habit of relentlessly observing people and minutely scrutinizing everything that they do. Whenever I am outside the comforting environs of my solitary existence, I spend most of my time gazing at people. It is an amusing activity but then it has a downside too. I have once again malformed into that annoying, judgmental, rude and cold person that I was. I try to read people’s actions and then I associate them with their constant struggle to conceal their flaws. It irritates the f**k out of me. Even though I am aware of the fact that every human has a tendency to hide his or her vulnerabilities, I judge people when they do so. To me they become some gigantic attention-sucking leeches who would do anything to project themselves as the ideal strong individual who is ‘too cool’.

I am tired of being so mad at everyone. I know the phase will pass eventually. I just wish I knew how to make it less frustrating.

Roland Garros 2008 Men’s Singles Final. Nadal defeats Federer 6-1, 6-3, 6-0. The score line is just incredible. I am a little sad that Roger Federer couldn’t win today. As predicted, Rafael Nadal walked away with the trophy. The match was a lopsided affair. I expected Federer to put up some resistance and he tried but in the end, Nadal proved to be too tough. I still believe he’ll do it one day. Here’s to the greatest tennis player of all times…Roger Federer.

Retiring in style

Justine Henin, my favorite woman tennis player announced her retirement on May 14, 2008. It came as a rude shock for all the tennis lovers across the world. Never before has a woman tennis player retired ranked one. I was eagerly waiting for the French Open to begin where she has been undefeated since 2004. It is disappointing that she will not be there to defend her title. :(
